What ten thousand kronor is enough for

The question was what can be done for ten thousand kronor. The answer turned out uncomfortable: not a collection, not a workshop, and not the cheapest minimum order either.

We asked the question because it is the only one that matters when nobody has invested anything. The calculation was done from the top down, against actual price information, not against a desired budget.

WhatCostDoes ten thousand cover it
Cheapest documented minimum order: pocket square, 75 pieces10 500 krNo, 500 kr short
Scarf 002, 60 pieces20 400 krNo
Cashmere scarf, 50 pieces29 000 krNo
Cutting plotter and heat press12 637 krNo, 2 637 kr short
The whole basic workshop25 900 to 33 100 krNo
The whole New Year collection430 000 to 490 000 krNo

That is the honest picture. Ten thousand does not cover a single one of the six items, and the closest we come is the cheapest minimum order, which is five hundred kronor short.

What it does cover

The Stockholm archipelago at 59 degrees north. Six rows of islands lie behind one another in receding haze over a lead-grey sea, with low saffron sunlight from the right and a black rock in the foreground.
Stockholms skärgård på 59 grader nord. Sex öräder ligger bakom varandra i sjunkande dis över ett blygrått hav, med lågt saffransgult solljus från höger och en svart berghäll i förgrunden.

It covers building the bridge across the minimum order instead of trying to jump it. A paper toile, a couple of fabric swatches, a second-hand plotter, and time. None of those gives us anything to sell, but every one of them makes the first real order cheaper and less risky.

  1. Build and test the cut in paper and cheap fabric before anything is ordered.
  2. Buy fabric swatches, not fabric rolls.
  3. Let the first order be the smallest one that can sell out.
  4. Sell out before the next order is placed, not after.
A bridge costs less than a jump that fails.
