The plotter that took four weeks out of the sampling round

A cutting plotter for 5 650 kronor does not make garments. It makes templates, paper toiles and placement tests, and it brings two of four sampling steps home from a factory that is twelve to sixteen weeks away.

A sampling round at a factory is four samples in sequence and none of them can be skipped. PROTO for proportion, FIT for the fit in the right fabric, PP with exact fabric and labels approved in writing, and TOP pulled from the actual production run. Two to three weeks per sample, and FIT almost always comes in two rounds.

That adds up to twelve to sixteen weeks for a tailored garment, before production has even started. Add four to eight weeks of production and three to six weeks of fabric delivery, and a garment developed from scratch sits twenty to thirty weeks away. That is not the factory's fault. It is what doing it properly costs.

What can actually be moved in-house

The cutting plotter is a machine with one blade, one downforce setting and one roll feed. It cuts paper, board, vinyl, felt, leather and thin fabric up to three millimetres, in a thirty centimetre width. That sounds modest until you count what thirty centimetres is enough for.

The working hypothesis is that the lab removes PROTO and one FIT round. Never PP, never TOP. That is four to six weeks, and it is an assumption we have not measured yet. We write it as an assumption until five garments have gone through the chain and there is something to compare against.

The board toile

The most underrated use is also the simplest. Cut the pattern piece in 200 to 300 gram board, score the folds and perforate the seam lines. Now there is a physical template that draws an identical line every time, no matter who is holding the pencil.

For collar, cuff and shoulder section, 80 to 100 grams is enough. Tape it together, put it on the form and look. Ten minutes later you know whether the collar is too high, before anyone has cut into fabric that costs thirty euros a metre.

Vinyl, and when it is the wrong choice

Cut vinyl, meaning HTV, gives one colour per layer. It is good for logotypes, monograms, lines of text and neck labels, and it has better basic durability than the printed equivalent.

But large solid vinyl areas crack over time. Particularly at high wash temperature, in a tumble dryer and on stretch fabrics. For a garment meant to last years, large vinyl is the wrong choice, and it does not matter how good the sample looks in week one. Vinyl for small marks, embroidery for larger areas, print for full coverage.

The file discipline that saves the most time

This is the rule that costs nothing to introduce at the start and a great deal to introduce afterwards.

  1. Draw clean vector paths. No open paths, no duplicated point.
  2. One spot colour per cutting layer, named after what the layer is.
  3. Expand all text. A font missing at the factory is a lost week.
  4. Expand all strokes. A stroke is not a path until it is one.
  5. Save as SVG or PDF, never as an application format.

Then the same file goes to the plotter, to the embroidery digitiser, to the printer and to the factory without being redrawn. We have redrawn two files because the rule was not in place from the start, and both times the redraw took longer than the original.

Which machine

The Silhouette Cameo 5 with a thirty centimetre width is the starting choice. Around 5 650 kronor including VAT, and sources differ by thirty-eight percent on the price, so budget the higher figure. The 4.9 metre roll feed makes pattern drawing possible without a mat.

The software is where the lock-in sits. The base version of Silhouette Studio does not import SVG. Designer Edition does, and that is enough. Business Edition only becomes necessary with several machines.

We did not buy Cricut, even though the machine is better on fabric. Design Space is cloud-bound and account-bound, and the pattern files are the brand's asset. Cloud lock-in is a business risk, not a matter of taste.

As volume grows, somewhere around two to three hundred garments, a roll-fed machine becomes worth it. Roland VersaSTUDIO GS2-24 or Graphtec CE8000-60. Neither is price-checked in Swedish kronor. Ask for two quotes, and choose on who provides service in Sweden rather than on the specification sheet.
